My Trans Am goes into the mechanics on Wednesday. Other than a painter spraying the black paint, nobody but my father and I have worked on my car. With my record of terrible experiences with body shops, I'm understandably nervous. I'm also not too keen on paying for labor or marked up parts.

What for?

Best of luck!

To get the damn thing running reliably, right now the thing won't even drive. Also to tune it and milk as much power as possible out of my set up.

No shame in sending it out. Sometimes the best person for the job is somebody who does it every day (or at least more frequently than you do).

The guy is suppose to be great at old cars, which is good because I'm too young and inexperienced to know how to tune an old engine.

Is he a Qjet guy?

I really hope so

Good luck! have you tried anything else besides a quadrajet though?

Good luck, young sir. May the F-body Gods peer down upon thee with hopes that this can once again be you and your ride:

Tuning carbonators requires a wizard. I'm not joking, they require magic to run properly.

I've tried my edelbrock but really would rather use my qjet for originality, power, and economy reasons.

Ah gotcha. quads are notoriously hard to tune in my experience and there are many aftermarket ones available

Hey man, think of it this way. What the man in the shop will do in a day or two you may not figure out for weeks. Weigh in, and you'll probably find this worth it. There's no shame in sending a car to the mechanic. A mechanic will know more and have more experience, that's a fact. I feel too often car guys get caught up in the "have to do everything m'self" thing and over-stress ourselves needlessly. Not everyone can rebuild a 429 big block themselves, and that's ok. You'll still enjoy your running car all the same.

if this guy is such a wizard, you should ask if you can learn a bit about carb set up from him. Getting all the carbs in sync is truly an art.
All the best info you get in life comes from asking an expert if you can watch them work, and absorb everything
